Media to have unprecedented access to Black Hills fires

by Jon Robinson (webmaster) |

Reporters with proper training looking to cover wildland fire fighting efforts in the Black Hills will have unprecedented access starting this fire season.

In a meeting Monday, State and federal officials decided to give media personal the option of either utilizing escorts or excercising free access to go where they wish without supervision.

In order to have this freedom, the media individual must have participated in a training session held earlier this year. The media escorts are to be trained this week.

Frank Carroll, U.S. Forest Service fire information officer for the Black Hills National Forest said "Nobody wants to be out there alone. Give us a chance to help you get the story. If you're not satisfied, go get it yourself. But we are going to make sure that you guys get the story you want."
