Rapid City to get air tanker again

by Jon Robinson (webmaster) |

The nationx's fleet of air tankers will be moved around a lot more this year to stand by in areas that have the highest fire danger, Twiss said. The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, will move the planes as needed, he said.

The planes will be used primarily for initial attack on fires and less in extended firefighting, NIFC spokesman Rose Davis said. "The mindset in the past was that if you have a tanker base, you'll get your airplane," Davis said in a phone interview Monday. "This year, wex've assigned tankers to a tanker base just as a place to start."
