John died October 2, 2000, at his home in Helena, Montana, after a three-year battle with prostate cancer. He graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in forestry and then served four years in the Air Force as a pilot and radar installation officer. John then returned to Montana and worked for the Forest Service until his retirement in 1986.
