Hutch, 71, and his wife Sally, both died May 17, 2004, in an automobile accident. He was born in Gresham, Nebraska, on January 30, 1933.

In his first year out of high school, Virgil jumped at NCSB and then began a 40-year career at Alcoa Aluminum before retiring in 1993. He was active in the Aluminum Workers Union and held positions at the local and national levels. The Hutchinsons had been married 51 years at the time of their death.
