Seeking Computer “Geeks” To Help Build NSA Web-Based Fundraising Program

by Mike Overby (MSO 67) |

During the last Board of Director’s meeting in Reding, CA, a decision was made to create a “cause related contribution” program capability for Smokejumpers to use in raising funds for the “NSA Good Samaritan Fund.”

Most people are familiar with programs such as “March of Dimes” where you or good-hearted volunteers agree to walk so many miles in exchange for contributions to a charity from friends and relatives.

Our new program will be similar to “March of Dimes,” and designed after the very effective fundraising program created by Team Hole in the Wall. Team Hole in the Wall is a grassroots, web-based approach to generating funds in support of the mission of Hole in the Wall Camps, the world's largest family of camps for children with life-threatening diseases. Volunteers who participate in marathons, bike races, 10K runs, triathlons and other events are inspired, empowered and given the necessary online tools to raise funds for a Hole in the Wall Camp in their part of the country or internationally. It’s a great way to stay in shape, meet people, have fun and, at the same time, help some pretty special kids as they face the toughest challenge of their young lives.

Since I was able to participate in a recent New York City Marathon through Team Hole I the Wall, I had a chance to experience how effectively their system works. NSA Board Members believe that it is possible for us to create a similar on-line program for our members to gain pledges for the Good Samaritan Fund while:

• Volunteering for a week to support the NSA Trails Program
• Running a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, etc
• Doing a long-distance walk or backpacking trip
• Etc.
Funds raised with through the NSA Good Samaritan Fund will be distributed by the Board to special needs experienced by current or former Smokejumpers, family members or others brought to their attention that need help.

If you have skills in web-design/programming, please help get us up and going with your talents.. You can call or contact me to discuss our plans and requirements.
