Gary Welch (CJ '60) Takes On Leukemia

by webmaster |

Notice to fellow jumpers and all friends of Gary Welch,

Gary’s brother, Larry, has informed me that the hard fought off Leukemia is back on Gary and the VA Doctors have given him only two options: Make himself as comfortable as possible until the end, or go into an experimental drug regime with both a high cure rate, and a high (20%) death rate. Being the forever fighter that he is, Gary has chosen the cure or die route.

He begins treatments Monday (Feb.9th, 2009) at the Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Larry Welch also lives there. We had a wonderful birthday party for Gary last summer with some 200 people, and even Jim and Emily Allen of Oregon attended. He was the first Jumper I met at CJ back in '61 and was my idea of what a Jumper should be, especially on a fire. I don’t think we will be fighting many more fires together, but we just might.
